Video Game Designers

If you’re considering a new career as a video game designer, here are a few tips that may save you some major headaches down the line.

Get educated. The cold hard truth is that most companies won’t even look at your resume if you don’t have a degree in the field of game design. A degree guarantees you have the skills to ‘hack it’ in the field, and also shows that you’ve got the dedication and commitment to pursue game design as a serious career.

Build up a portfolio of work that you can share. Employers want to see work that you’ve produced so they can get a sense of your talent level and style. Even if you’re at the beginning of your career you should be prepared to show examples of work you’ve done. It doesn’t have to be professional work. For a game developer this may be a movie or website, and for a designer or writer this could be illustrations or writing examples.

Keep at it. Making your dream career a reality won’t happen overnight, even for the most talented video game designers out there. Stay optimistic and realize that most people don’t have any idea what they want to do with their lives.
